Hairnt Wedding of Hoppy & Birdie – 5-21-2011

Once upon a time in a land not so far away, there was a place called Hairntville where lived a couple named Hoppy and Birdie. After living together there in peace and harmony for many years, they decided one day that they would be married, so a Hairnt wedding was planned. It was to take place the week after Trail Daze and people would come from far and wide to be there. Some came for Trail Daze and stayed the whole week until the hairnt wedding and offered their help to make the wondrous event be possible. After much planning, preparation and hard work by many, the happy day finally arrived. It was to be Saturday May, 21, 2011. When I arrived in the early afternoon, there was already many people there. Some of which I had not seen in many years. It was obvious that they were planning on camping all night as there was to be much celebrating to come. Everything had been transformed since I was there a week prior, into a form of magical fantasy land designed for a grand event. There was definitely LOVE in the air ! The trail up the hill to the upper field had been mowed and decorated and the field was also mowed and had rows of canopies and seats with views of the surrounding mountains that made for such a serene setting. There was a long trailer covered with all sorts of food to which I added my famous Trail Beans to. Pirate even brought his world renowned SPAM tray. It was going to be a meal fit for a king, queen, and all their royal friends.

When it finally came time for the actual wedding to begin, there was a long precession that led from the Hairnt House, up the hill to the location where the event would be held. This would include not only the bride and groom but all the groomsmen and bridesmaids all dressed in tie dye of course. It took awhile to make it to the top due to all the photography that was going on but,  it was well worth the wait. It was a precious moment as Birdy came down the aisle to join Hoppy who was already standing with the preacher at the small alcove that had been cut away in the greenery that grew there. It was decorated in fine Hairnt fashion with flowers and naturally, pink flamingo`s ! There were many children that played important roles as well like making bubbles from automated bubble guns.  One held the real bird nest that had the rings that were placed inside a broken egg shell and it was his job to present them at just the right moment. How cool is that ?

Not far into the vows, there were sounds of a shotgun going off from the nearby neighbors ! This brought on lots of laughter as we were not aware it was to be a shotgun wedding ! The preacher, Josh Holland is a close friend of theirs and he did a wonderful job of joining them together in holy hairntrimony. At one point, I did see tears come to Birdie`s eyes but, isn’t that what you are supposed to do at weddings?. As soon as they were married and ‘the kiss‘ was over, they walked back down the makeshift aisle for more photo op`s and then the reception began. There was much eating of all the fine foods, many beverages consumed including a HUGE bottle of Makers Mark that everyone had a shot of in PawPaw’s honor since he had passed on earlier this year and could only be there in spirit form.

There was also a walk to the top of the hill where more photo`s could be taken of the wedding crew with the awesome mountains in the background.

After the trip back down the hill was the traditional cutting of the cake. Of course, I had never seen a tie-dye cake before, but I knew that Birdie`s wonderful friend Kay had made it so it would be tasting awesome !

I could not stay much past this time as I had prior commitments to be somewhere else but, I heard the party that night was of historic proportions. There were even fireworks I was told.  I have known Hoppy and Birdie since at least 1994 and would not have missed this for anything. I did get to see many folks that I had not seen in several years which made the event even more special. I love them both, and wish them the very best and hope they are together for many years to come or as it was said, “Until death do us part”.
